Purpose

The Nurse Manager of the Medical-Surgical Units at Bon Secours hospital assumes 24-hour responsibility for the overall assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care on the unit. This position carries out the BSHSI mission, vision and values while overseeing patient care, customer service, performance improvement and budgetary responsibilities on assigned patient units. Consistently promotes a professional image of nursing at Bon Secours Hospital. This position reports to the Director of Nurses. This position is accountable to the Vice President, Patient Care Services/Chief Nursing Officer and the Director of Nurses.

Education/Experience/Skills/Licensure

- Must have a strong patient-centric focus and excellent interpersonal skills that support a “Relationship-Based Professional Practice Model”
- Must posses advanced computer skills – Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and ability to learn Visio software
- Valid Maryland Registered Nursing license
- ACLS
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. Must have Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing. Master’s Degree in nursing or a related field preferred
- Minimum 3 years recent acute care experience
- At least 2 years of successful supervisory/management experience in an acute care setting
- Working knowledge about Joint Commission, state and federal requirements
- Experience supporting and demonstrating standards of nursing practice and care and use of evidence-based practice
- Management experience within a shared governance setting desirable

Essential Functions

· Directs and ensures the established plan of care for patients.

- Conducts patients’ rounds on new admissions to assess patients’ condition and care given; responds to questions, and evaluates patients’ needs
- Makes rounds with physicians as requested, gives and obtains patient care related information
- Assures that the patient plan of care is implemented to provide safe, quality care

· Analyzes and evaluates the delivery of patient care and the quality and effectiveness of nursing care provided

- Refers and/or ensures referrals of patients/ families and/or significant others to appropriate resources, e.g. Social Services, Pastoral Care, etc.
- Maintains accountability for delegated aspects of nursing care ensuring appropriate skill level is assigned and appropriate follow-up at all staff levels
- Coordinates the medical-surgical units’ functioning with other nursing units and other departments to ensure patient throughput and continuity of care and information

· Collaborates with other departments to create systems and problem-solve on-going issues that impact patient care.

- Provides patient coverage or Administrative Coordinator coverage on as needed
- Working collaboratively the Director of Nurses and the Director of Clinical Practice, participates in the development and timely revision of nursing policies and procedures.
